Gang Boss Key in N.Y. Jail Sex Scandal
By New York Daily News
Published: 07/03/2003

A Bloods gang leader known on the street as Bronx Tale is at the center of a Rikers Island sex scandal that is now the subject of a massive Department of Investigation probe, the Daily News has learned.
Severino Marrero, 23, who is listed on prison records as a Bloods 'five-star general,' is the man suspected of getting his girlfriend to have sex with a jail officer so he would let her smuggle in drugs, sources said.
Marrero, doing time for selling crack and awaiting trial on murder charges, is being investigated by DOI probers for arranging the sex romps.
Two weeks ago, The News reported that Correction Officer Keith McFarlane, 46, was placed on modified duty at the request of the city's inspector general. A law enforcement source close to the case described the investigation as 'huge,' and said, 'There are definitely more [disciplinary actions] to come.'
The trysts between McFarlane and a Bronx woman and reputed Bloodette known on the street as Lady Bug took place when McFarlane was off-duty, sources said.
The woman, whose name is being withheld by The News, is now cooperating with DOI investigators against McFarlane, saying the officer allowed her to bring drugs into the visitors room after she had sex with him, sources said. The woman, who has not been charged with any crime, could not be reached recently.
McFarlane, a 12-year Correction Department veteran, was responsible for strip-searching inmates after they met with visitors to make sure they did not bring contraband back into the Anna Kross Center, one of 10 maximum security jails on Rikers Island.
This month, McFarlane had his weapon taken away and was moved from Anna Kross.
DOI spokeswoman Emily Gest declined comment on the case recently. But law enforcement sources said the agency is conducting a sweeping investigation into drug trafficking on Rikers Island, with a focus on the possible role of city correction officers.
