Former Mass. Jail Officer Sentenced for Beating Detainees

A former lieutenant with the Suffolk Sheriff's Department was sentenced Monday to nearly four years in federal prison for his role in the beatings of men being held at the Nashua Street Jail.
Eric J. Donnelly, 36, pleaded guilty March 3, just before he was scheduled to go to trial. He was sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison, to be followed by two years of probation on charges of criminal civil rights violations, conspiracy to obstruct justice, obstruction of justice and perjury.
Donnelly was one of seven officers indicted in connection with four beatings of pretrial detainees at the Nashua Street Jail between June 1998 and October 1999.
The officers used excessive and unjustified force to punish prisoners being held before trials who were perceived to be troublemakers, prosecutors said.
Donnelly, as a lieutenant and supervisor, failed to keep inmates out of harm's way by permitting, condoning and even participating in the beatings, prosecutors said.
Donnelly is the fourth officer to plead guilty or be convicted and the second sentenced for his part in the assaults. Two were acquitted of all charges and the trial of the last man is still pending.
