New York police captured two convicted murderers on Tuesday who escaped from a maximum-security prison using a rope made of bed sheets, authorities said. Timothy Vail, 35, and Timothy Morgan, 26, were arrested at a market about five miles north of the prison. The two were found in a stolen van, said James Flateau, a spokesman for the Department of Correctional Services. Around 7 p.m. police received a report of the stolen vehicle at a shopping plaza. Police converged on the scene, and after a short pursuit, arrested the two haggard men without incident, state police said. 'They looked pretty tired and ragged,' said New York State Police Capt. Michael Manning. 'They had been running through the brush areas and had some scratches.' Vail and Morgan will likely face first-degree escape and burglary charges. The two broke into a few buildings during their time on the run, including an unoccupied home in Horseheads, Manning said. The men were discovered missing Monday morning during a routine check at the Elmira Correctional Facility. According to prison union officials, the men used a sledgehammer to break the concrete ceiling, crawled through a ventilation duct and escaped to the roof, which had no razor wiring. Union officials said the sledgehammer was probably stolen from one of several construction projects inside the building. Officers later found tied-together sheets that led down an outside wall of the four-story cellblock at the prison, located 75 miles southwest of Syracuse. Searchers set up roadblocks and went door-to-door asking residents whether they had seen the men. Police dogs and helicopters patrolled the highways and the FBI was contacted. Vail was serving 49 years to life for the 1988 rape and murder of a pregnant secretary. Morgan was serving 25 years to life for the 1998 murder of a cab driver. |
