Former La. Jail Officers Plead to Inmate Abuse
By Associated Press
Published: 08/05/2003

Two former Webster Parish jail officers have pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges in connection with the abuse of a Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center inmate.
Brian Mitten pleaded guilty to simple battery and was fined $500 plus court costs. John Smith entered a guilty plea late last month and received the same sentence.
Both were fired when an internal investigation got under way.
The probe was prompted by a complaint from inmate Jimmy Smith, who alleged he was handcuffed to a cell, forced to remove his clothes, then hit with a belt and threatened with a mop handle.
The sentences were issued last week.
