Sheriff forbidding felons to visit jail inmates

All felons, regardless of their current status or profession, will no longer be able to visit inmates housed at Maricopa County (Ariz.) jails.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the policy, which will take effect this Tuesday, will enhance jailhouse security and reduce wait times for people wanting to visit loved ones behind bars. The sheriff will have a data bank with the names of all felons housed in his facilities in the past 10 years. The office also is obtaining the names of all felons convicted in Arizona in the past decade. "This ban may eliminate the potential of convicted felons communicating with incarcerated persons for the purposes of continuing their criminal enterprises both in and out of jail," Arpaio said in a news release.
Last year, nearly 400,000 people visited inmates booked into the county's five jails. Inmates still can make collect phone calls and send postcards to communicate with those who are banned.
