A Texas jail inmate killed himself with a deputy's gun during his interrogation Sunday, officials told KPRC.
The prisoner was brought to the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office July 27, after he was accused of stabbing a man along Highway 59 in Beasley, officials said.
He was not handcuffed, investigators said, because he was calm and did not appear to be a threat.
While being interrogated, the prisoner attacked a deputy, grabbed the deputy's gun and committed suicide with a single shot, officials told KPRC.
The deputy was not injured.
The prisoner's identity was not released pending notification of next of kin.
The stabbing victim is hospitalized in critical condition with 10 stab wounds to the neck, back and stomach.
Fort Bend County officials said it is up to each deputy to decide if a prisoner should be handcuffed or if they want to check their weapon at the door during interrogations.
The sheriff's department said it is reviewing its policies following the incident.
