Prosecutors filed new charges of larceny July 29 against a former correction department chief, accusing him of using Rikers Island jail officers to remodel his bathroom and kitchen and build him a backyard basketball court. Anthony Serra, who once ran the 10 jails at Rikers Island, was named in an 81-count indictment earlier this year on charges he pulled jail officers to serve as construction and landscaping workers at his suburban home. The new 144-count indictment includes grand larceny counts and adds charges of falsifying business records and unauthorized use of a vehicle. A Bronx grand jury alleged that Serra had Rikers corrections officers, working on city time, remodel his bathroom and kitchen, build a basketball court and install stereo speakers at his home in the Putnam County suburb of Mahopac. Serra arranged for a Department of Correction truck, trailer and mini tractor to be sent to his home to build the court and falsified time sheets and overtime hours for the employees involved, the indictment said. Serra was suspended following his February indictment. He pleaded innocent and resigned in May. His attorney, Peter Driscoll, didn't return a message seeking comment last week. |
