| Fla. County Jail Mistakenly Releases Inmate |

Authorities are searching for an inmate mistakenly released from the Bradford County (Florida) Jail more than two months ago. Joseph B. Stafford, 33, was released May 23 after serving a 50-day sentence for failing to appear in court on a drunken driving charge. But instead of being released, Stafford should have been turned over to the Florida Department of Corrections to serve the final two years of a six-year, four-month sentence for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Stafford had been out of state prison on parole when he was arrested in the Bradford County drunken-driving case. The search for Stafford began July 28 after The Gainesville Sun received an anonymous tip about the case. 'We are still looking into this,' Department of Corrections spokesman Sterling Ivey said. 'This has been kind of an unusual case. Normally if we have inmates in a county jail, we make a monthly call to ensure they are still there, but in this case, we don't know yet what happened.' A letter from the Parole Commission was hand-delivered to Stafford and a copy hand-delivered to the jail less than two weeks before his release. The letter notified Stafford he was scheduled to go directly from jail to prison because he had violated the terms of his conditional prison release. Bradford County Sheriff Bob Milner was in touch with Stafford's family on July 28 and said they assured him they would encourage Stafford to turn himself in. 'He (Stafford) knew about this and didn't tell us when he was being released,' Milner said. 'Right now, he is enjoying some freedom he is not entitled to.' |
