A surprise shakedown at the Santa Fe County Detention Center turns up some contraband, but not drugs. 'The contraband that we found was mostly clothing that the inmates aren't allowed to have,' said Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano. 'We did find one syringe and some cash, which they're not allowed to have.' Solano gave the jail a 'B-' during the sweep, a passing grade he hopes the New Mexico Corrections Department will agree with later this month during their inspection. A lot of money for the county is at stake. The Corrections Department pays $54 per day for each of the state's 140 inmates in the jail. That's $2.7 million per year. 'It's in the county's interest, because the money we make from those inmates helps offset the costs of our own inmates,' Solano said. Solano said that if the current management company, Management Training Corporation, fails in the state's inspection, he would ask the county commission to place the jail under the Sheriff Department's command. MTC has until later this month to raise standards for housing state inmates. The company said they take the audit very seriously and feels the state will be impressed. |
