Two Wise County, Va., county jail inmates were recaptured late July 28 after they allegedly escaped in a county vehicle while assisting on a self-help water project. Gary Allen Young Jr. and Derrick Allen Dotson escaped around 11 a.m. while they were helping people in the Strawberry Mountain community near Wise install water lines, according to Sheriff Ronnie Oakes. Young, 23, and Dotson, 20, stole a truck belonging to the Wise County Public Service Authority, which had one of its employees operating a backhoe for the project, Oakes said. Police are still investigating how the inmates got the keys to the truck, he noted. The truck later was found abandoned in Appalachia, Oakes said. Police arrested the inmates around 11 p.m. after receiving an anonymous tip that they were in a mobile home at Woodland Trailer Park in Big Stone Gap. The resident of the mobile home was a woman, whom Oakes declined to name at this time. Police are still investigating the woman's connection to the inmates and whether she assisted in their escape, he said. Young was charged in the incident with felony counts of escape and grand larceny, and a misdemeanor count of petty larceny, Oakes said. Dotson was charged with a felony count of grand larceny, and misdemeanor counts of escape and petty larceny. Oakes said Dotson was charged with misdemeanor escape because he was being held in jail only on misdemeanor charges of failing to appear in court on a charge of underage possession of alcohol and obstructing justice. Young was being held on a felony charge of grand larceny, he said. |
