Some people complain about living close to a prison, but in Adams County, living close by has turned into an economic bonanza for local farmers and businesses. The days of Washington apples showing up at the Adams County prison are over. Now, it's more likely the apples that are delivered to prison are home grown and that is good news for the local economy. 'We just didn't want to find Washington state apples in our prisons or Frito Lay pretzels made in Texas. We wanted to see our food stuffs served in our prisons,' Commissioner Harry Stokes said. At the Rice Fruit Co. near Biglerville, company officials are celebrating. Under a new measure passed by Adams County Commissioners, 50 percent of all the food being supplied to the new Adams County Prison must be produced, processed or packaged within 40 miles of Adams County. That is good news for local food suppliers who previously lost out to out-of-state businesses when it comes to feeding Adams County prisoners. 'Sometimes it is difficult to find locally grown products except at farmers' markets around here. We would like to see a lot more of the locally produced, and the effort by the county commissioners might help to put some of the local produce, not only into out local institutions, but our local stores,' said John Rice, with Rice Fruit Co. Adams County ranks sixth in Pennsylvania for overall agricultural production. It is first in the state for apples. It is estimated the regional economy will see an additional $100,000 a year from using local food suppliers to feed county inmates. The new Adams County Prison is scheduled to open up in mid-September. |
