Wisc. Inmates May Get Seven Hot Meals A Week
By WISC
Published: 08/06/2003

After a disturbance in the Dane County (Wis.) Jail over the weekend, the sheriff told WISC he may add a seventh hot meal to the inmates' menu. Eleven inmates in one cellblock started a disturbance when they were given cheese and bread as part of their evening meal.
An inmate told WISC about his frustrations when the news team shot video inside the jail recently.
Under a plan to save $170,000, inmates are now getting one cold supper a week instead of seven hot dinners.
'Common sense would suggest that maybe they ought to have that meal, and that might help us maintain order. But the opposite is also true -- that by giving in, that may just provide encouragement for the next time,' Dane County Sheriff Gary Hamblin said.
Hamblin said an over-capacity inmate population and an air conditioning breakdown contributed to the problem.
The county executive said the cost cutting that might have sparked inmate frustrations is just one example of the choices the county has to make.
