Twenty-one members and associates of the Gangster Disciples street gang are behind bars as a result of a four-year investigation by Racine, Wisconsin, police and state and federal agents. Police said with these men behind bars, they have solved five homicides, seven attempted homicides, several armed robberies and two cases of arson. Seventeen men have already been sentenced and are doing time, four others have been convicted and are awaiting sentencing and police said that they are about to make four more arrests. Police told 12 News the crimes they committed go back to the early 1990s when there was a rash of homicides in Racine. 'Especially around 1992, we had a lot of violence, gang crime in Racine, specifically on the south side of Racine we had several homicides that were going on for a couple years. What we did was we started working with the community, with a federal task force to start looking into exactly who was committing these crimes, and over the years, we have identified these parties that got the convictions,' Racine Police Sgt. William Macemon said. |
