Jimmy Ray Gorman may be the most notorious inmate in the Bexar County Jail. After all, he's the only inmate to have ever escaped. Gorman, who slipped out of a hospital bathroom window while in the custody of a lawman in June 2002, offered a glimpse recently of his four months on the lam. 'If I were to compare my life to somebody, it would be somebody like Jesse James,' Gorman said in an exclusive interview with KSAT. 'Of course, he killed people and I've never killed anyone.' The former Marine, who doesn't consider himself to be a violent man, claimed he had plenty of run-ins with the law during his escape. 'I was pulled over four or five times,' Gorman said. '(I) talked my way outta tickets. I had a gun with me. Other people would have panicked as soon as that officer walked up to the vehicle.' Gorman was eventually captured in October 2002 at a San Antonio hotel. A capture he called inevitable. 'My family needed me,' Gorman said. 'That was more important. During the interview, Gorman apologized to family and friends he said was 'harassed or alienated or ostracized' while he was hiding in Mexico. He also said no one harbored him. Gorman, who is now behind held in the tightest security level at the jail, was found guilty in April 2003 for aggravated robbery, the reason he was jailed when he escaped. He was sentenced to 99 years in prison. Gorman is now awaiting trial for the jail escape. |
