A maximum-security prison was locked down Tuesday after a state police lab confirmed a bullet was fired into a library book at the facility, state Commissioner Glenn S. Goord said. The Sullivan Correctional Facility will remain locked down until 10 a.m. Wednesday so that officials wearing bulletproof vest can search all areas of the prison, Goord said. ''If one inmate has the means to fire a bullet within a prison, that represents a most serious risk to all of our employees,'' he said. On Monday night, security staff began searching the 5,000 books in the law library because two tin can lids were found last week in the bindings of hardcover books, Goord said. Inmates often sharpen the lids to use them as weapons. Officials discovered a round hole penetrating through about 900 pages of a 3,000-page volume of ''New York Reports Annotated, 61-63,'' a summary of cases decided by the state Court of Appeals, he said. The book was taken to the state police forensic lab in Albany, where tests determined that a ''small caliber'' bullet was fired into the book. A search of the library began after it closed at 10 p.m. and continued through the night. Officers found the book almost immediately in a book cart near the officer's station. The book is part of the library's surplus and inmates do not have to sign it out. A second book was found with about 90 pages of its more than 1,000 pages hollowed out. Inmates must check out that book. The library signing list was being reviewed and inmate borrowers interviewed. Homemade weapons and other contraband were confiscated during the search, but no other damaged or altered books. All inmates are ordered to remain in their cells during the lockdown. Only those with family or legal visits or who need medical attention will be allowed to leave their cells. Last October, the prison was locked down for three days after three rounds of .22 caliber ammunition was found in the hollow handle of an aluminum mop used by inmates in the A-North cellblock. No more ammunition or a firearm was found during a prison search or in the subsequent four months since then. Before then, the last lockdown was in June 2001 for a routine search for contraband. |
