A corrections official who once ran the 10 jails at Rikers Island pleaded innocent Thursday to charges he had officers renovate and landscape his suburban home on city time. Anthony Serra was indicted on 81 state counts, including grand larceny, falsifying records and possessing stolen property. 'He boldly and arrogantly turned the agency into his own labor force,' said Rose Gill Hearn, New York Department of Investigation commissioner. The charges center on Serra's alleged misuse of corrections officers to perform work on his split-level home in Mahopac. He also had them run errands, mow the grass and even take out the garbage, the indictment alleges. Serra, 42, who remains on the city payroll, was released on his own recognizance pending a March 7 appearance. He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted of the top count, grand larceny. Serra has received two 30-day suspensions and has been demoted five ranks to assistant deputy warden. |
