A fire at Riverfront State Prison in N.J. destroyed a housing unit yesterday and forced the evacuation of 236 inmates, authorities said. No one was injured in the blaze, which broke out at 2:45 p.m. in one of three barracks-style units, said Matt Schuman, spokesman for the state Department of Corrections. "Riverfront remains totally secure," he said. "The important thing is that everyone got out safely." Firefighters had the fire at the medium-security prison, which contains 1,136 inmates in North Camden, under control shortly after 3 p.m., Schuman said. The 117 inmates in the adjacent unit returned after fire officials declared that building safe. Left without housing were 119 inmates. "We're still trying to figure out how we'll accommodate those 119 displaced prisoners, at least on a temporary basis," Schuman said. "We're hopeful that they'll be able to put them up in the gymnasium or send them to another prison." Fire officials were working last night to determine the cause of the blaze. |
