A prisoner who escaped from the Putnam County (Fla.) Jail last week was found around 3 p.m. Tuesday at a residence in Orlando. Officials said Johnny Edward Staten Jr. was arrested without incident. Agents were staking out a residence on Mercy Street in Orlando Tuesday when they confronted a man matching Staten's description. Though the man initially denied that he was the one wanted for the jail escape, after questioning, he admitted that he was Staten. Staten, 24, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for armed carjacking and was awaiting transfer to the Department of Corrections. He escaped from the jail Jan. 8. For the past four days, Putnam County sheriff's Detectives Lt. Scott Simmons and John Merchant have traveled back and forth to Orlando, working with agents from Florida Department of Law Enforcement to find Staten. Sheriff Taylor Douglas said 18-year-old prisoner Steven Coleman was charged with aiding Staten's escape for allegedly giving him a kitchen personnel jumpsuit. Wearing the white jumpsuit, Staten was able to mix with the general jail population during the morning feeding time. He then left the secure area to which he was assigned. Deputies said he climbed over the razor-wire fence, and they found a bloody jumpsuit about one-half mile south of the jail. Staten will now be booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of escape. |
