Escaped Ky. inmate evades capture

Police were searching last night for a prisoner who escaped yesterday morning from the Roederer Correctional Complex in LaGrange, Ky.
Earl Aldrich, 36, walked away between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. Aldrich was serving a 12-year sentence for third-degree burglary in Fayette County and for being a persistent felon. He also was convicted in 1992 in Scott County of felony theft and third-degree burglary.
It was the second escape in six months from Roederer, leading state officials to review security there and to improve the way neighbors are notified of escapes from Roederer and two other prisons nearby.
Aldrich had been in the complex's minimum-security section, which includes dormitories outside the prison's perimeter fence, since late November. He was being kept there until space was found for him in another minimum-security institution.
Prison officials realized he was missing during a head count after breakfast, said Lisa Lamb, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections.
Officers from police departments in Oldham County and from the Kentucky State Police combed the area on foot with dogs and from a helicopter, alerting residents and business people along the way.
In response to the escape, Corrections Commissioner John Rees ordered an outside review team to investigate security at Roederer, which is standard, Lamb said.
Although Lamb said "there are no perceived problems at this time," the review will try to determine whether the escape was due to an employee's negligence. "If we need to change the way we're doing the job, we'll do that," she said.
Rees also directed wardens at each of the three institutions on the state's LaGrange property - Roederer, the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex and the Kentucky State Reformatory - to update and consolidate their escape-notification systems.
