Prison Uprising in Brazil Leaves Four Dead

Inmates at a prison in central Brazil ended a 33-hour-long rebellion that left four prisoners dead Tuesday after authorities agreed to meet some of their demands.
Authorities agreed to review certain sentences, transfer a number of prisoners and allow more conjugal visits during carnival, the pre-Lenten fest that begins on Feb. 28.
Demands that the prison's warden be replaced, however, were rejected.
The uprising began Monday at the Agostinho de Oliveira Junior Penitentiary in Unai, 90 miles (145 kilometers) southeast of Brasilia, the capital.
Some 400 inmates seized two officers and killed four prisoners who opposed the rebellion, warden Jose de Bonifacio Reinoso said by telephone. Both officers were released unharmed.
The inmates were armed with homemade knives, but it was not clear whether they also had guns.
Rebellions are common in Brazilian jails and prisons, where living conditions are deplorable and overcrowding is common. But police said the Agostinho de Oliveira Junior Penitentiary held fewer than its capacity of 500 inmates.

Do you know someone who has been arrested in Waco or McLennan County? It’s important to find a good Waco lawyer to represent you in the matter involving your own liberty. Look for the best Waco lawyer that you can find. Whether you have been accused rightly or wrongly, it’s important to know your legal rights that concern whether you go to jail.
