A man who killed a woman during a burglary in 1993 was executed February 13 by injection despite a recommendation from the state parole board that he be given clemency. Bobby Joe Fields, 39, smiled at his sister and his cousin, then told his two attorneys witnessing the execution to ''stay strong. You all keep fighting.'' After a night of drinking and using cocaine, Fields broke into Louise Schem's Oklahoma City house to steal her television. But she walked in with a gun, according to court records, and the two scuffled. According to the records, Fields shot the 77-year-old woman as she tried to flee. Fields' attorneys argued during his clemency hearing that he should be spared because he had no advance intention of killing Schem. The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board voted 3-1 in favor of clemency, with one abstention. Gov. Brad Henry denied clemency. Parole board chairwoman Stephanie Chappelle said she believed it was not Fields' intent to ''cause bodily harm.'' Fields and his first attorney, a public defender, had expected a judge to give him life in prison without parole when he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in 1994. But Judge James Gullett sentenced Fields to death. |
