Jackson County, Iowa, Inmates Escape, Captured

Two thin inmates at the Jackson County Detention Center escaped Monday afternoon but were apprehended at a Maquoketa motel about two and a half hours later.
Paul Weidner, 21, and Michael K. Scherman, 17, escaped the jail by crawling through a damaged portion of the exercise yard fence. Another inmate, Daniel DeMoss, 23, assisted them in their escape by lifting up the bottom of the fence.
Jackson County Sheriff's deputies and Maquoketa police apprehended Weidner and Scherman at about 4:20 p.m. and returned them to the jail from the Key Motel, where Scherman had been staying prior to his arrest on July 24.
Jackson County Sheriff Russ Kettman said the men who escaped each are about 5-foot 8-inches tall and weigh about 120 pounds.
'A larger person wouldn't have gotten through,' he said.
Clamps holding the bottom of the exercise yard fence to the pavement either came loose or were broken to allow the fence to be lifted. The exercise yard will be closed for about a week while repairs are being made, Kettman said.
The repairs will include tubing attaching the fence into the cement every foot, which will make it nearly impossible for anyone to escape in the future. The sheriff said before razor wire was attached to the top of the exercise yard fencing an inmate escaped but jail breaks are rare. The jail holds 12, with eleven beds and a holding cell.
