Another officer has been assigned to the prison unit where defrocked priest John Geoghan was killed in an effort to ensure two officers are always on duty when inmates are out of their cells. At the time of Geoghan's death, one of two on-duty officers was temporarily assigned elsewhere. The change at the protective custody unit at Souza-Baranowski Correction Center in Shirley comes as officials prepare to return the unit to normal operation after months of lockdown. Geoghan, 68, a convicted child molester and a central figure in the Boston Archdiocese's sexual abuse scandal, was strangled and beaten to death in his prison cell in August, allegedly by an inmate who was serving a life sentence for murder. A special commission investigating Geoghan's death and prison conditions is expected to release its report at the end of this month. Rob Brouillette of the state correction officers union said an agreement to add an officer was reached with correction officials last week as part of the department's plan to reopen the unit next Tuesday. Before Geoghan's killing, one of two officers on most shifts was allowed to leave the unit to escort inmates to medical appointments and for other duties. Under the new agreement, a roving officer will be used to escort inmates elsewhere. |
