An inmate, already sentenced to more than 400 years behind bars, was convicted Wednesday for the brutal stabbing of a prison nurse. Anthony Johnson was found guilty of the attempted murder of Miriam Lopez, 30. Lopez was just starting her shift at the Everglades Correctional Institution Feb. 11, when Johnson, 39, attacked her. He used a homemade 8-inch long shank to stab Lopez. Lopez was able to break away from the attack and corrections officers subdued Johnson. Lopez was seriously injured and was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center. Lopez testified at the trial, and has recovered from the physical injuries, though she was clearly very emotionally fragile on the stand. Johnson will already spend the rest of his life in prison for a long list of convictions including armed-robbery, armed aggravated assault, battery with a deadly weapon, car theft and grand theft. Lopez has filed a civil lawsuit against the correctional institute saying the institute failed to provide adequate security. She was a mental health nurse at the time of the attack. |
