Staff at Watertown Correctional Facility in New York say they can't remember shots ever being fired inside the prison's razor wire fences. That changed Wednesday, however, as an officer turned to his weapon to stifle a brawl among a dozen inmates in the prison yard. A State Corrections Department spokeswoman told WOKR that 91 inmates were in the yard when the melee broke out at 10:40 am. The inmates were warned by the watch tower officer to stop and when they ignored him a warning shot was fired. That put an end to the fight as inmates hit the ground and officers swarmed in with handcuffs. Insiders tell WOKR the prison atmosphere had been tense all morning after an inmate assault, possibly involving a stabbing, the night before. Wednesday's prison yard brawl was touched off by a stabbing just moments before the fight broke out. When the dust cleared the stabbing victim was taken away by ambulance. Some officers in civilian clothing were conducting firearms training near the facility. They were rushed into the prison, still in plainsclothes and handed weapons to assist in inmate control. Although the situation quieted afterwards, additional precautions were taken including a 'slow lunch' in which inmates are fed in smaller groups than usual. |
