State and local law enforcement are seeking a man who escaped from a youth prison and then allegedly kidnapped a woman and her 3-year-old daughter. Neal M. Tregre, 18, escaped Tuesday from an educational class for minimum custody prisoners at Western Youth Institution in Morganton, the Department of Correction said in a news release. The escapee allegedly entered a Burke County home on Tuesday afternoon and tied up three boys before forcing their mother and her daughter into their Toyota sedan, Sheriff John McDevitt said. Two rifles were taken from the home, according to the sheriff. The three drove to the Gaston County town of Belmont, where the mother and daughter were released Tuesday night. The suspect drove on in the car, McDevitt said. The woman was sexually assaulted, McDevitt said. The child was unhurt. Tregre, who is from Havelock, was last seen driving a 1997 black Toyota Corolla with North Carolina license plate FSY-5298, according to the Correction Department. Tregre was serving a 39-month sentence for breaking-and-entering convictions in Craven County. Gov. Mike Easley on Wednesday announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to Tregre's capture and conviction. |
