The state parole board's new acting chairman has called for a full audit of the agency's operations to ensure that its decisions are proper and not influenced by politics or other outside pressures. John D'Amico, a former state Superior Court judge who started his new job last week, said the review would be performed by senior staff members and would likely take at least six months to complete. ''In my recent meeting with (Gov. James E. McGreevey), he stressed that he wants the integrity and decision-making of the Parole Board to be above reproach,'' D'Amico told The Record of Bergen County for its August 7 editions. McGreevey nominated D'Amico for the post last month, and he still must be confirmed by the Senate. The parole board has come under criticism in recent months, mostly for the circumstances surrounding the decision to free reputed mobster Angelo Prisco last summer. Federal prosecutors also are investigating whether the governor's office intervened to help Prisco. State ethics officials are also reportedly investigating whether William McCargo, who preceded D'Amico as acting chairman, violated conflict-of-interest rules. |
