Group of Ga. inmates indicted for tax fraud

A federal investigation into a $2.4 million corporate tax fraud scheme has led behind bars to a group of south Georgia prison inmates.
Michael Dexter Little, 35, of Lyons; Gary Barnes, 36, of Sandersville; Ricky Lamar Davis, 41, of Columbus, and his wife, 29-year-old Angie Davis, were indicted on conspiracy and fraud charges by a federal grand jury Thursday as part of a six-month investigation by FBI and U.S. Internal Revenue Service agents.
Investigators say, between November 2001 and March 2003, the four created several phony corporations, including Wiley Manufacturing and ARM Inc., and filed false income tax returns with the IRS to get refunds.
Angie Davis, a former school teacher, allegedly downloaded the necessary IRS forms off the Internet and mailed them to the inmates, FBI Special Agent Tony Alig said.
The scheme was low-tech, but it was executed well and operated very smoothly, Alig said. It was very successful in creating the illusion that these fictitious corporations were legitimate.
No government money was lost in the case because the agents were able to intercept refund checks and block additional phony claims in the scam, Alig said.
Little, the accused ringleader who is already serving 41 months at the Federal Correctional Institution in Jesup for past tax fraud, has been charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud the government and two counts of making false claims against the government.
Barnes and the Davises are charged with one count each of conspiracy to defraud the government. Barnes has been serving a 108-month sentence in federal prison for cocaine possession, and Ricky Davis has been serving a four-year sentence in state prison for burglary.
