A corrections officer at Southeast Ohio Correctional Institution was arrested last week after allegedly trying to take drugs into the prison's grounds.
State Highway Patrol troopers and investigators with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction obtained information that Sylvester Thurston, 32, Columbus, planned to take illegal drugs into SCI, the patrol reported.
Thurston was charged with attempting to convey drugs onto the grounds of a correctional facility and bribery, both third-degree felonies, and possession of marijuana and OxyContin, a fourth-degree felony.
He was arrested by troopers around 6:30 p.m. Monday in a parking lot near U.S. 33 with one ounce of marijuana and 10 pills of OxyContin. He was booked into the Fairfield County Jail.
If convicted, he faces up to 10 1/2 years in prison and a $25,000 fine, the patrol reported. The patrol is responsible for investigating criminal activity on state-owned and leased property, such as prisons.
