Ill. Inmates bust cell, attack two

Two Illinois prison inmates broke through a cell wall early Thursday and attacked two other inmates, sending one to the hospital, a prison official said.
A tactical team was sent into the Pontiac Correctional Center to pull the inmates from both cells, said Illinois Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Fairchild. He did not know what time the attack occurred.
'We had a couple of guys who knocked a hole in the wall of their cell,' Fairchild said. He said the hole gave inmates an opportunity to attack their neighbors; he would not discuss the size or location of the hole.
Fairchild said one inmate was taken to OSF Saint James-John W. Albrecht Medical Center, Pontiac, where he remained Thursday afternoon. A condition report was not available.
The maximum security prison practices disciplinary segregation, in which inmates spend 23 1/2 hours a day in their cells. Inmates typically are sent to Pontiac after they violate rules at another state prison.
Inmate attacks have dropped since disciplinary segregation started in 1997. Thursday's attack was the first serious incident in several years, according to the corrections department.
Inmate names were not released. The incident remains under investigation by the corrections department.
