A state corrections officer serving with the Army in Iraq was killed last week when a package he was examining exploded, said California Department of Corrections officials. Staff Sgt. David Perry, 36, of Bakersfield, has been in Iraq since January, corrections spokesman Russ Heimerich said. Perry was a member of the 649th Military Police Force based in San Luis Obispo and worked at Wasco State Prison, about 30 miles north of Bakersfield. He was serving with the 4th Infantry Division at an Iraqi police station in Ba Qubah, 45 miles northeast of Baghdad, when a package he was inspecting exploded. The blast killed Perry and wounded two others, Heimerich said. Perry had been with department since June 1996. All CDC facilities were ordered to lower their flags to half staff, Heimerich said. Perry is survived by a wife and three children. |
