A combined 162 inmates at Fukuoka Prison in Japan have suffered from food poisoning, the prefectural government said Saturday. The hygiene division of the Fukuoka Prefectural Government suspects that food served at the prison is responsible for the mass poisoning. The symptoms of the inmates were not serious. The inmates, aged between 22 and 78, complained of diarrhea, stomachache, high fever and nausea -- typical symptoms of food poisoning -- on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to officials at the division. Prison officials have detected bacteria suspected of having caused the poisoning from two of the 162 inmates. The prefectural government's health and environmental research institute is analyzing the bacteria in a bid to determine the cause of the food poisoning. In 1995, 46 inmates at the same prison suffered from food poisoning, according to prison officials. |
