Two inmates demanding release from the Klamath County Jail took a female officer hostage and stabbed her with a homemade weapon before the convicts were subdued with chemicals, authorities said. Officer Kerry Hitchcock was in the high-security section of the jail Tuesday when one of the prisoners grabbed her, said Klamath County Sheriff Tim Evinger. The men allegedly handcuffed and pepper-sprayed her, Evinger said. He would not provide further details of the assault. When Evinger contacted the inmates through Hitchcock's radio, they allegedly demanded their release and the release of a fellow inmate. During the negotiations, Hitchcock was stabbed. Her colleagues then stormed the hostage area and subdued the inmates with chemicals and a stun gun. Hitchcock was hospitalized but her injuries were not believed to be serious, Evinger said. James Walter Werby and Jacob Ryan Allen face potential charges of assault, kidnapping, attempted escape and attempted murder, Evinger said. They were also evaluated at the hospital. Werby, 26, from Redding, Calif., was jailed on a charge of attempted murder. Allen, 23, was sentenced Tuesday to 70 months in the Oregon State Penitentiary. |
