For the second time in less than a month, an inmate at the Central Virginia Regional Jail was found dead in his cell, officials said.

Ronald E. Daniels, 31, was found hanging by a sheet Thursday night. Daniels was being held in a restrictive housing cell 'for his own safety concerns,' said jail superintendent Ed Crosley. He had been held since December on a charge of aggravated sexual battery involving a 3-year-old girl.

State police are investigating the incident.

Late last month, a Greene County man was found hanging in his maximum-security cell by his shoelaces. Officials said Shawn T. Roach, 30, hung himself just hours before his bond hearing for a killing he claimed was self-defense.

State police Sgt. Gary Settle said the two deaths did not appear to be linked.
