The first African-American woman to head a Wisconsin prison has been named warden of Racine Correctional Institution, a medium-security men's prison.
Quala Champagne, deputy superintendent of the Ethan Allen School in the Town of Delafield in Waukesha County, will start her new job Monday, said Bill Clausius, Department of Corrections spokesman.
Four other women are wardens at three of the state's men's prisons and at its women's prison, Clausius said. But Champagne is the first minority woman named to such a position, he said.
The 37-year-old Milwaukee resident was appointed by Corrections Secretary Matt Frank.
Champagne began her career as a program review coordinator at Racine Correctional Institution. She also has worked as an assistant supervisor at the Southern Oaks Girls School in Union Grove, and she held other positions at Ethan Allen School before becoming deputy superintendent in July 2000.
Champagne earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a master's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
A swearing-in ceremony, open to the public, is scheduled for Sept. 16.
The female wardens heading men's prisons, according to Clausius, are Judy Smith at the Oshkosh Correctional Institution; Jane Gamble, Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution in Plymouth; and Cathy Farrey, New Lisbon Correctional Institution.
Jodine Deppisch heads Taycheedah Correctional Institution for women in Fond du Lac, Clausius said.
