| Prison Chaplain Among Four Charged with Sending Money to Iraq |

A doctor and a state prison chaplain are among the four people charged in Syracuse yesterday with illegally transferring money to Iraq. The four are charged in federal court with sending as much as $2.7 million dollars to Iraq in violation of the U.S. government's bans on money transfers to Iraq. Authorities say the money was funneled through a charity called Help the Needy. Those arrested today in the Syracuse area: --Rafil Dhafir, Fayetteville, an oncologist --Ayman Jarwan, Syracuse, executive director of Help the Needy --Osameh Al Wahaidy, Fayetteville, a Muslim religious leader at the state prison in Auburn and a math teacher at the State University College at Oswego. The fourth person indicted, Maher Zagha, is living in Jordan and is a former college student in Utica and Syracuse. |
