A Florida fugitive has been sent back to that state to face multiple charges, but first he had to be caught after he broke a window hinge and escaped the Cherokee County Jail. The fugitive evaded capture February 20 before a homeowner finally stopped him at gunpoint the next morning. In the hours between, William Thomas Hewlett, 32, said he buried himself to avoid capture by the 50 or so lawmen on his trail, broke into another Cherokee County home for clothing and stole a pickup truck, said Cherokee County Sheriff Keith Lovin. 'He was quite ingenious, actually,' said Lovin, who sent Hewlett under the guard of four officers to the Asheville Regional Airport hours after his recapture so that the troublesome fugitive could be flown to Pinellas County, Fla. In Florida, Hewlett faces multiple charges of armed robbery, bank robbery and home invasion, the sheriff said. Hewlett was captured February 17 in the Ranger community after leading deputies on a foot chase. Once in jail, Hewlett immediately set to work on a window hinge, using a sheet as a vise, Lovin said. Over and over he'd wind it up, then release the tension. Finally, three nights later, the hinge broke and Hewlett slipped away, the sheriff said. |
