The South Dakota Senate has approved an emergency spending bill that will provide an extra $2.6 million to cover higher-than- expected medical bills for prison inmates. Sen. Duane Sutton, R-Aberdeen, said the state is running short of money to provide medical care for inmates because the prison population is growing faster than originally anticipated. The extra money will be used to help pay for inmate health care in the current budget year, which ends on June 30. The state could face problems from lawsuits if it fails to provide adequate medical care to inmates, Sutton said. The Senate voted 31-4 on February 20 to pass HB1015, which has already been approved by the House. The measure will become law if signed by Gov. Mike Rounds. |
