A Cook County (Ill.) Jail inmate charged with attempting to dig his way out of a jail cell was scheduled to appear for a bond hearing last Monday. Leland Dudley, 25, an armed robbery suspect, was charged last Saturday with attempted escape after officers found loosened cinder blocks in his jail cell and a rope made from bed sheets, Cook County sheriff's office spokesman Bill Cunningham said. Dudley was out at recreation time Thursday when officers conducted a routine "shakedown" in the second-floor jail cell of Division 5, a medium-security section of the jail, according to Cunningham. During the search, an officer noticed a floor-level wall vent was loose. Pulling that back showed the cinder blocks behind it were also loose, Cunningham said. Further investigation found that cinder blocks from another wall, as well as the bricks from the face wall of the building were loosened, he added. Officers determined that Dudley scraped away at the wall for about three weeks, using a clothing hook from a wall and a piece from the wall vent, Cunningham said. Officials believe the rope, made of bed sheets, would have been used by Dudley to lower himself to the ground, he said. Two other inmates were also under investigation for the attempted escape and could "possibly be charged later this week," Cunningham said. Cook County Jail has not had an escape since May of 1995, Cunningham said. He could not recall any recent attempted escape "this sophisticated or elaborate," he said. Dudley had been jailed since June of 2002 while he awaited trial for armed robbery charges, Cunningham said. |
