| French Inmates Clean Up Beaches Blackened by Oil Spill |

Eighteen inmates from the Bordeaux region of France volunteered to spend spent a day at the beach last week scooping up patches of oil that have soiled large stretches of France's Atlantic coastline. The inmates were escorted by seven prison officers, who watched over the prisoners, while they cleaned up oil spilled from the sunken tanker Prestige. Oil from the tanker has washed ashore on the beaches of France's Basque and Landes regions, a stretch of about 150 kilometers (90 miles), since late December. |
