Inmate Charged after Hostage Situation at La. Jail

The inmate at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center who held a nurse hostage on Saturday was charged with second-degree kidnapping, said Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office Lt. Craig Stansbury on Sunday.
Calvert Antoine, 22, of Lafayette was on suicide watch Saturday night when he grabbed a nurse and demanded to see his relatives, Stansbury said. Within an hour, a special reaction team had Antoine in custody.
'No weapons were involved,' Stansbury said. 'They went in and subdued him.'
Stansbury would not say if force was used or whether Antoine was sedated. He also would not say if an officer was in the room with Antoine and the nurse before the incident.
'I can't go into detail about procedures,' Stansbury said. 'They don't let information like that be public knowledge, so someone can't think of something ahead of time.'
Antoine was serving time for a charge of second-degree battery and remains in isolation as officers continue their investigation, Stansbury said.
Sheriff Mike Neustrom used the last hostage incident in December 2001 between an inmate and a female officer as a springboard for discussion about the possibility of renovating the jail. But Neustrom was adamant that the structure of the building did not contribute to the incident in 2001.
Stansbury said he could not comment on factors that led to Saturday's incident or about the status of a renovation project.
He said correctional center administrators were unavailable for comment until today.

Do you know someone who has been arrested in Waco or McLennan County? It’s important to find a good Waco lawyer to represent you in the matter involving your own liberty. Look for the best Waco family law attorney that you can find. Whether you have been accused rightly or wrongly, it’s important to know your legal rights that concern whether you go to jail.
