A state corrections officer stabbed his live-in girlfriend to death and fled to Georgia before he was captured several hours later, authorities said. Michael L. Lewis, 35, was charged with murder in the death of Debra Gatewood, 46. He was arrested early Tuesday by a state trooper in Hahira, Ga., and was being held in the Lowndes County Jail on $500,000 bail. Gatewood, who has an 8-year-old son with Lewis, was stabbed repeatedly with a knife late Monday night at the couple's town house in Plainfield. Her body was found in an upstairs bedroom after Lewis' uncle called police around 8:25 a.m. Tuesday, but the murder weapon has not been recovered. The cause of the attack was not immediately known, and police declined to comment on whether the couple's son was home at the time. Gatewood had recently moved out of the home and was staying with relatives, and police did not know why she returned to the residence. Lewis, a senior corrections officer who works at East Jersey State Prison in Woodbridge, could be returned to New Jersey later this week if he waives his right to an extradition hearing. Lewis has worked for the corrections department since 1988. Chris Carden, a department spokesman, said Lewis would be suspended without pay when his office is formally notified of the charges. |
