An inmate at the El Paso County sheriff's office kept another inmate from hanging himself with a bedsheet. Jared Manzanares, 22, was breathing and alert when deputies cut the sheet and called for an ambulance early Sunday, El Paso County sheriff's office spokeswoman Melissa Hartman said. One inmate held Manzanares so he wouldn't asphyxiate while another inmate notified officers. A search of Manzanares' belongings turned up a suicide note, but officials did not disclose its contents. Manzanares and the other inmate were housed in an unlocked cell with access to a ''day room'' with a community shower, sink and toilets. Nothing could have been changed to prevent a situation similar to Sunday's, Hartman said. In February, a jailed woman died after hanging herself from an upper bunk bed with her bedsheet. After a review of six suicides during the past four years, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office in 2002 changed some of its policies, providing deputies with additional suicide prevention training and taking other measures. |
