Wisconsin Escapee Facing More Than 30 Years in Prison

The future of a 23-year-old Wisconsin fugitive who briefly escaped from local authorities on Saturday could include more than 30 years behind bars.
Antonio Howard, who was born in Milwaukee and recently moved to Aberdeen, is wanted in Wisconsin for a probation violation. An outstanding warrant for that violation was what landed him in Brown County Jail Friday night.
And his recapture after a Saturday escape along with two burglary related charges could mean Howard won't be going back to his home state anytime soon.
Howard faces the escape charge after getting away from officers at Avera St. Luke's Hospital around 7:30 a.m. Saturday only to be apprehended around 4 p.m. that afternoon in southern Aberdeen.
Howard had been taken from the county jail to the hospital after complaining of chest pains, Sheriff Mark Milbrandt previously said.
The escape charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in the state penitentiary and a $10,000 fine.
Howard also faces two additional felony charges relating to an alleged Dec. 24 incident in which an Aberdeen hotel was burglarized, said Jim Billion, deputy state's attorney.
The charges of third-degree burglary and intentional damage to property each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in the state penitentiary and a $10,000 fine.
Howard had originally been arrested Friday night during a motor-vehicle stop after he had left The Zoo bar on South Main Street. Authorities said he was driving without headlights and operating his vehicle with a revoked driver's license. At the time it was also discovered he was wanted in Wisconsin for violating his probation.
Howard was placed in Brown County Jail on the warrant and charged with driving with a revoked license, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum punishment of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
The state's attorney's office is unsure of the exact charges Howard was convicted of in Wisconsin. Billion said he believes it was a drug-related offense that led to Howard being placed on probation.
At this point the state's attorney's office will make contact with Wisconsin authorities to determine Howard's future, Billion said.
Howard appeared in magistrate court on Monday and asked for a court-appointed attorney. His next appearance in magistrate court is set for Wednesday.
