Ohio Inmate Found Dead In Local Prison Cell

A prisoner at the Lebanon Correctional Institution was stabbed and found dead in his cell last week, according to the State Highway Patrol.
Ronald J. Rogers, 32, was pronounced dead at Middletown Regional Hospital. Investigators said a homemade shank was found near Rogers. They were trying to determine if that was the murder weapon, said Sgt. Robin Schmutz, a highway patrol spokeswoman.
Rogers' cellmate is a suspect in his death, but had not been charged with anything Monday, Schmutz said. She declined to identify the cellmate.
Rogers had been in prison since 1989, serving a sentence of seven-to-25 years for a rape conviction from Franklin County.
The Butler County coroner is to do an autopsy Tuesday to determine the cause of death. Although the prison is in Warren County, the Butler County coroner will do the autopsy because the hospital where Rogers was taken is in that county, Schmutz said.
Rogers had been turned down three times for parole eligibility during his sentence. He had been scheduled to go before the state parole board again in June 2003, board spokeswoman Andrea Dean said.
