Sacramento County has been hit with a major ruling involving jail strip searches that could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. A Sacramento Superior Court Judge ruled last week that former inmates at the downtown jail are entitled to $1,000 each because they were subject to body cavity searches. The inmates were arrested on non-violent charges between 1996 and 2000. The judge ruled that jail deputies violated the law by not conducting the searches with a higher degree of privacy. Sheriff's Department officials said they are modifying their procedures in light of the ruling and are considering an appeal. |
