The Marion County (Ind.) Jail is ending most face-to-face visits and replacing them with a system in which family and friends would see inmates only via phone and remote camera. Visits from ministers and attorneys would be exempt from the new rules. The new policy, which goes into effect after a $200,000 video visitation system is installed, is more stringent than the policy in Indiana's prisons. Prisons only restrict face-to-face contact when an inmate has had disciplinary trouble, said Pam Pattison, a Department of Correction spokeswoman. Jail officials said they think the video system will reduce staffing costs and the risk of smuggled contraband. Jail officials are not sure how much might be saved. Inmates' families and friends were notified about the new system last week as they called to make visitation appointments. All visits have been stopped until the system is completed. |
