A St. Bernard Parish corrections officer was arrested Sunday night on drug charges. The suspect, Robert Benjamin Frilot, 22, was taken into custody at his home. He and a former inmate each face a charge of conspiracy to bring marijuana into the parish prison. A two-week investigation by the FBI uncovered the alleged conspiracy. According to investigators, Frilot was working with former inmate Roberto Medina on a plan to bring drugs into the prison. Frilot denies the charges. 'At 9:30 last night, I heard a bang on my door and my wife asked who it was,' Frilot said. 'I opened the door and about five detectives came into my house and told me I was under arrest for bringing illegal drugs into the jail.' Frilot said he never intended to break the law. 'I mean, as far as bringing drugs into the jail, that never crossed by mind,' he said. 'You took the oath to enforce the law,' St. Bernard sheriff's spokesman Lt. Mike Sanders said. 'That does not necessarily mean you can break the law. And when that happens, you turn in your badge, your commission and your position is terminated.' In addition to the drug charges, Frilot also faces malfeasance-in-office charges. |
