The last of four Death Row inmates pardoned by Ill. Gov. George Ryan before he left office filed a federal lawsuit Jan. 9 that alleges Chicago police detectives tortured him into confessing four murders he didn't commit. Leroy Orange, 52, of Chicago was convicted in 1985 and sentenced to death for the fatal stabbings of his former girlfriend, her son and two others. The lawsuit against former Chicago Police Cmdr. Jon Burge and numerous others alleged that detectives tortured Orange during 12 hours, administering electric shocks and holding an airtight bag over his head. Three other Death Row inmates who also were pardoned by Ryan--Aaron Patterson, Madison Hobley and Stanley Howard--previously filed similar lawsuits. |
