The mother of an inmate who committed suicide at the Allegheny County Jail more than six years ago has settled a lawsuit she filed against a private company hired to screen inmates. Charles Fine, 33, killed himself Oct. 21, 1996 by using his shoelaces to hang himself from a bunk in his jail cell, officials said. The jail had just been built and jail officials had said Fine was the first person to kill himself at the facility. Fine's mother, Barbara Mayfield, sued Correctional Medical Services Inc., of St. Louis, Mo., in 1999, claiming the company should have known that Fine was at risk to kill himself. The county hired the health care company to screen inmates. The trial started in a federal court in Pittsburgh on Jan. 21, but U.S. District Judge Robert Cindrich announced recently that the parties reached a settlement. Vincent Coppola, Mayfield's attorney, and Vincent DeFalice, the attorney for the company, would not discuss the terms of the settlement. |
